Auditions can be nerve-wracking, but with the proper preparation, you can present your best self and increase your chances of landing the role. Whether you're auditioning for a play, a musical, or a film, the key lies in meticulous preparation. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you ace your next audition.

Step 1: Research the Project

Before you even set foot in the audition room, thoroughly research the project you're auditioning for. This includes understanding the storyline, the characters, and the production's overall tone. Here are some key aspects to consider:

A. Study the Script

  • Read the script multiple times: Familiarize yourself with the characters, their motivations, and the story's arc.

  • Understand the context: Dive into the project's historical, cultural, or social context. This will help you embody the character more authentically.

B. Research the Director and Production Team

  • Watch their previous work: Understanding the director's style can give you valuable insights into the kind of performance they might be looking for.

  • Learn about the production team: Knowing who's behind the scenes can help align your approach with their vision.

C. Know the Audition Requirements

  • Read the audition notice carefully: Ensure you understand what's expected of you, including any specific scenes or songs you must prepare.

Step 2: Choose a Monologue

Selecting the right monologue is crucial because it showcases your acting range and understanding of the character. Here's how to make a wise choice:

To find a good monologue, Look through some scripts.

  1. You can find them in your teacher’s script collection, online, at a bookstore, or in a library... There are tons of places to find scripts

  2. Next, Check out the character breakdown of each script. You should Google it and then see if any of the characters are reasonable for you to play.

  3. Find a few longer sections of speech for that character and read them out loud. If you like how it sounds and you feel connected to the text and the character, look for a scene where the character is the main focus and see if you can piece together a monologue.

A. Match the Character

  • Choose a monologue that aligns with the character you're auditioning for: This helps the casting team see you in the role.

  • Highlight your strengths: Pick a monologue that allows you to showcase your acting strengths, whether it's dramatic, comedic, or something in between.

B. Consider the Context

  • Ensure the monologue fits the project's tone: If you're auditioning for a comedy, choose a comedic monologue. For a drama, opt for a more serious piece.

C. Keep It Appropriate

  • Avoid overly explicit or offensive material: Choose a monologue that is suitable for the general audience and aligns with the project's content.

D. Try creating a monologue from a scene!

This is Ginger Morris’s favorite way to craft an engaging monologue. Below are some of her choices for monologues, as well as some resources to help you choose and craft a monologue of your own.

No matter how you find your monologue or song, be sure it is active, honest, and dynamic.

Step 3: Choose a Song (if applicable)

If you're auditioning for a musical or a program like Summer Stock Austin, you'll likely need to prepare a song as well. Here's how to choose the perfect one:

  1. Find a few songs you love to sing and find backing tracks online.

Use this formula to assess them:

    1. Is it in a key that fits your comfortable vocal range?

    2. Can you find a section to use that fits the requirements of time and/or measures?

    3. Can you show your range without straining?

    4. Do all of the notes or phrases feel achievable to you right now?

    5. Does this song showcase YOUR voice? And does it show off your strengths and assets that are unique to you alone?

    6. Can you create a clear character who wants something in the context of your cut?

    7. Can you deliver this cut successfully even on a day when you’re not at your absolute best vocally?

If you answered yes to all of these, you might have a great audition song. If you answered no to any of these, look for other options AND continue to work on your technique so that you can build your range for next time!

A. Know Your Vocal Range

  • Select a song that showcases your vocal abilities: This doesn't necessarily mean picking the most challenging song; instead, choose one that allows you to shine.

B. Match the Character's Style

  • Consider the character's personality and style: The song should reflect the character's emotions and personality traits.

C. Practice, Practice, Practice

  • Be confident in your delivery: Know the song inside out and be prepared to sing it comfortably.
